Reading |
Basal Story The Basal story this week is Talking Walls. Students will identify details that support the main idea. They will also create their own talking wall of heroes in our community.
Target Reading The Target Reading passage this week is Deserts. Each table of students will be assigned a particular ecosystem to research, prepare a project and share with the class.
Reading Center Activities They will continue working with activities in the Reading Center. These are independent learning activities that will be used during small group reading time.
AR Students should be making daily progress toward their AR goal. By the end of this week students should be at 65% of their AR goal. Read Aloud We will continue reading Charlotte's Web this week. Students will use a Frayer model to explore the new vocabulary words for each chapter. This week we will talk about pets and their needs and habitats, and discuss questions pertaining to the reading with the other students sitting at their table.

Language Arts |
Spelling final syllables -tion, -ion, --ture, -ive, -ize Grammar combining sentences
Writing Students will continue to write daily entries in their Language Arts journal. Students will continue to practice on sentence structure and parts of speech through the daily Target Reading practice.
Students will also write a diamante poem comparing and contrasting living in the city vs. living in the county. They will study the structure of a limerick and will compose one to share with the class.
Students will also continue writing cursive letters using their Handwriting Without Tears Handbook.
Language Arts Center Students will continue working with activities in the Language Arts Center. These are independent learning activities, which will be used during the Small Group Reading time.

Math |
Multiplication Facts Students will continue working to earn a multiplication banana split. Each week they will review and be tested on various multiplication facts. As they score a 90% or higher, they will earn an assigned item for their multiplication banana split. This week we will recall the facts for 3's, 6's, and 9's..
Measurement Connections Students will experiment with measuring the weight, mass and volume of various objects. They will create a chart displaying the metric and customary units of measurement.

Science |
Food Chains and Ecosystems.
Students will learn how plants and animals depend on each other and their physical environment and can be affected by changes in the ecosystem. Changes in the food chain impact the entire ecosystem. Pet Rock and HabitatStudents will design a rock to resemble an animal and then will create a habitat based upon that animal's needs to survive.

Social Studies |
Choices Affect Communities Students will develop their understanding of how good citizens, acting alone or working together, can improve the community and help other people.
On Friday, May 11, the 3rd grade will tour downtown Commerce to visit City Hall, the Police Department,. the Fire Department, The Commerce Library, the Post Office and Guaranty Bond Bank. This will provide them the opportunity to visit with citizens working together to improve the community and help other people.
